Practical tips for living or traveling in Greece

Thinking of coming to Greece — not just for a quick vacation, but to really live the experience? Whether you’re visiting for a week or staying for a while, there are a few things that can make your everyday life here easier. In this post, I’ll share practical, real-life tips that most guidebooks forget to mention.

Card or Cash?

Yes, most shops, restaurants, and cafes in Greece have card machines (POS), and you can usually pay by card. But in some places, especially smaller ones, you might hear “The POS is broken.” That’s why it’s always a good idea to carry some cash with you — especially smaller bills like €20 and €50 notes.

If you go to an open-air market or take a taxi, cash will definitely be easier. And in some places, you might even get a small discount if you pay without a receipt… (just saying!)

Greek Mealtimes and Food Culture

Greek food culture is one of the most important parts of everyday life. Greeks usually eat:

  • Breakfast: around 8–9am
  • Lunch: around 2pm
  • Dinner: around 9pm

Dinner sounds late? Yes, but that’s normal here. And when you don’t feel like cooking, food delivery apps are very popular. You can even order coffee to your door!

How to Order the Perfect Gyro

The most famous Greek street food is, of course, the gyro. If you want the full experience, order it like this: “Pita gyro ap’ ola”. That means: with everything. It usually includes fries, tomato, mustard, ketchup, onion, and tzatziki.

In Northern Greece, when someone asks you “Do you want salad with your gyro?”, they usually mean sauces like tzatziki or spicy cheese dip (not lettuce and cucumber). So don’t be confused!

Everyday Tips for Airbnb or Apartment Living

Most apartments in Greece are fully equipped. You don’t need to bring hairdryers or irons — they’re usually provided. Washing machines are very common, and many have a fast 14-minute program that’s super convenient.

Also, when shopping, bring your own bag. Plastic bags cost extra and reusable ones are better for the planet.

Coffee is a Lifestyle

Greeks love coffee — not just drinking it, but living it. The most popular types are freddo cappuccino, freddo espresso, and frappé. Most people drink at least two a day, and you’ll see scooters delivering coffee all day long. Want to feel like a local? Start your day with a Freddo in hand.

Where to Shop

There are plenty of supermarkets in Greece (like Sklavenitis, Lidl, Masoutis), but don’t skip the laikí agora — the weekly street market. It’s where locals buy fresh fruit, vegetables, and more at better prices. Plus, it’s a great way to experience local life and practice your Greek.
